Coca-Cola has planning to not renew Wayne Rooney’s licensing deal.
The Manchester United striker was initially dropped on the company’s promotional roster last September following says such a he had cheated on his wife Coleen when she was pregnant.
Rooney hit the headlines following an expletive-filled outburst directly to camera in the wake of scoring a hat-trick in United’s 4-2 win against West Ham United go on Saturday.
However, in a statement today, Coca-Cola said: “Our contract with Wayne Rooney came to an end last year and we mutually agreed that we could not renew our relationship.”
Despite dropping Rooney as the face of Coke Zero last year, a spokesperson for the drinks giant at the opportunity argued that the working relationship between the two, declared to be superiority £600,000 a year, was “ongoing”.
They added: “We wish Wayne greatly in his career. Our marketing plans have evolved to focus on our sponsorship of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the upcoming launch of our plans for the Olympic Torch Relay.”
Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that Rooney’s behaviour may not impact the club’s chief sponsorship understanding in American financial company Aon Corp.
“The basis Aon faced in the sponsorship is overly Manchester United transcends any one player and it is all about aligning among the No. 1 club in the world’s No. 1 sport,” a spokesperson said. “We leave player-related inquiries to the club.”
