Sidney Lumet Award winning American director has passed away. He was 86.

According to reports his stepdaughter Leslie Gimbel believed Lumet died of lymphoma at his home in Manhattan,

Lumet, born in Philadelphia, was married two times – to actress Rita Gam, socialite Gloria Vanderbilt, Gail Jones and Mary Gimbel, who survives him.

He was one of the most major film directors of the minute side of the 20th century.

He was prolific, directing a multitude of as opposed to 40 movies, and versatile, dabbling in many different film genres.

Lumet was nominated for Academy Awards uni times as a director. He never won, but acquired an honorary lifetime achievement Oscar in 2005.

12 Angry Men (1957),
Dog Day Afternoon (1975),
Network (1976)
and The Verdict (1982),

all of that earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Director.

The Encyclopedia of Hollywood reports that Lumet was one of the a large amount of prolific directors of the up to date era, making more than one movie per year on normal since his directorial debut in 1957.

He was noted by Turner Classic Movies for his “strong direction of actors”, “vigorous storytelling” and the “social realism” in his most ideal work.
